Theiss Research is formally a nonprofit corporation. It was founded and incorporated by Jurgen Theiss in San Diego, California, USA in January 2006 and is therefore listed by the California Secretary of State. Its purposes as stated in its Articles of Incorporation "are to provide a supportive environment in which scientists can perform and otherwise advance scientific research, for public dissemination and benefit, in areas including, but not limited to, the studies of the ocean and atmosphere as well as to establish and maintain international relations in science."
The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has granted Theiss Research exemption from federal income tax under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. This 501(c)(3) status not only guarantees tax exemption, but also other privileges such as the eligibility to receive tax-deductible charitable contributions and funding from foundations, governmental agencies, and other funding organizations. Theiss Research is therefore listed in Publication 78 of the IRS, which shows organizations eligible to receive tax-deductible charitable contributions. Furthermore, the State of California Franchise Tax Board has granted Theiss Research exemption from state franchise or income tax under the section 23701(d) of the Revenue and Taxation Code.
Theiss Research is also registered with the Office of the Attorney General of the State of California and the Central Contractor Registration.
