Dr. Zavala-Garay is a member of the Coastal Ocean Modeling and Prediction Group at Rutgers University. This group hosts the community internet portal of the Regional Ocean Modeling System (ROMS) and is therefore also actively engaged in providing support, training new users, as well as establishing and maintaining partnerships with projects using ROMS. Dr. Zavala-Garay has been assisting coastal modeling efforts especially in the developing world and has also participated in oceanographic cruises, including several in the Gulf of California conducted by Mexican research institutions. Help directing the Zanzibar Project is a natural extension of his past activities.

Resonsibilities

Dr. Zavala-Garay's responsibilities are to help define and closely advise the projects of the visiting US students and research staff at the Institute of Marine Sciences (IMS) in Zanzibar. He is also collaborating with the partners of the Zanzibar Project in the East African region, in particular with the Tanzania Fisheries Research Institute (TAFIRI) (Network).

Dr. Zavala-Garay will be with the US students at IMS in Zanzibar each year from 2009 to 2011.
