THEISSRESEARCH An organization of independent scientists

Involvement Opportunities

The Zanzibar Project is very open to anyone who is interested in becoming in any way involved. Below are a few general examples of the forms of involvement and how they could be funded. Those who would like to become involved, please contact Dr. Jurgen Theiss at .

Involvement Examples

Advice and other support is always very appreciated. If someone is self-funded and has relevant expertise, he or she is welcome to visit Zanzibar to teach coastal oceanography in general or to join the Zanzibar Project and assist in supervising the visiting US students in the summers of 2009, 2010, and 2011 (Opportunities).

The research carried out by the US students could also be expanded. For example, while physical measurements are being taken in the Zanzibar Channel chemical or biological ones could also be taken. This would require extra resources. Someone interested in such an extension of the research could raise funding and provide personnel and equipment.

The dynamics of the Zanzibar Channel could also be of interested to other organizations, especially those in the East African region, besides the Institute of Marine Sciences (IMS) in Zanzibar. An example is the Tanzania Fisheries Research Institute (TAFIRI) in Dar es Salaam, which has already partnered with the Zanzibar Project (Network). The Zanzibar Project is therefore now not only aiming at answering questions of importance to IMS in Zanzibar, but also questions that are important to TAFIRI.

Possible Funding

The Office of International Science and Engineering (OISE) at the National Science Foundation (NSF) invites US scientists to "include international components in new proposals submitted to any relevant NSF program, or request supplemental funding for projects already supported by NSF." See OISE-NSF web site.

NSF also supports educational components of research projects. Expanding the US student projects as described above could be developed into such an educational component. Please contact Dr. Jurgen Theiss at if you would like to discuss this funding possiblity.

Rotary International offers "Rotary Grants for University Teachers" worldwide. Teaching coastal oceanography at IMS in Zanzibar could be an activity eligible for this funding. See the Rotary International web site.

If you are aware of other relevant funding opportunities please let Dr. Jurgen Theiss at know.
